Hello, a Happy New Year to all, and welcome to Merry Wind Farm! My
name is Melinda and I live here with my 85 year young mother, my only
child (son) who is a sophomore in college locally, 3 horses, 4 dogs,
and 10 cats! My animals are all adopted. The horses are retired
off-the-track race horses, all of which due to minor arthritis type
ailments are no longer suitable for high-end riding careers. Three out
of four dogs are adopted from the pound, and all the cats were either
dumped or adopted from the pound. All animals now live the life of
luxury.
We have 15 acres here and grow hay and some corn or soybeans. The farm
was settled in the winter of 1804/5 by a Quaker family that came from
North Carolina. The foundation of the original log cabin can still be
seen underneath a kitchen trapdoor. The front part of the house is a
brick Federal farmhouse, which was built over the log cabin c. 1810.
Then came the middle part, c. 1850, back part, c. 1900, then the
mother-in-law suite where my mother lives, c. 1980. We have two barns,
including the original bank barn, carriage house (now garage), milk
house (now gardening shed), and chicken coop. The old outhouse and
smoke house bit the dust (literally) and are now buried here.
I love horses and all animals (obviously) LOL, old houses, antiques,
colonial decorating, gardening, and country living. I am a stitcher
(over 30 years) of reproduction samplers, rug hooker, quilter, and have
lately taken up punch-needle.
We are a small family here, as I lost both my father (alzheimer's) and
dear husband (cancer) within 4 months of each other is 2009. Today, my
mother, son, and I are a great support to each other, and I am grateful
to be able to live in such a beautiful, peaceful location!
I hope you enjoy my home.
Also, I am so honored that I will be included in Judy Condon's
new garden book that will be available mid-March.
Melinda
