Through My Back Door
When we built this little house almost 25 years ago I wanted it to look like it had been here for 100 years. I truly think it does. There are no built in cabinets, no linen closets, and the floors certainly look like they have been down that long. I use free standing cupboards, that are all at least 150 years old, in the kitchen and dining area. My husband built the house with help from our two sons and our son in law. Our oldest son was in the Marine Corp at the time and our youngest was in college and working on weekends, so his help was mostly our son in law. We did hire professionals to do some parts. We have a large great room because we had young grandchildren at the time, and wanted them to have a place to play and be with the rest of us at the same time. It is now my reading nook .
The house sets on five acres and a creek runs on two sides. When the kids were younger they had a swimming hole and a cable where they could swing across to the other side. Sadly now it isn’t clean enough to swim in. It was also a good fishing hole and Debbie will still go down and wet a line. She is like her daddy and brothers and loves to fish. (Unfortunately none of her family has that desire, nor do I) Her daddy isn’t here to fish with her. Some of you on the forum are aware, but others are not almost four years ago my husband had to go into a nursing home. He suffers from Parkinson Disease and dementia. This has been very hard as we are a very close family. It isn’t what we would have chosen, but it is what we have to live with. It was a safety issue.
As all of you know by now, other than God and my family, I love home. To quote Gladys Taber, “I would gladly travel to Europe and other interesting places, if I could come home and sleep in my bed every night”. That is not a direst quote, but it is close enough. Lol I love collecting antiques and for several years was a dealer and did shows. My favorite furniture is southern and circa 1850-1880’s. I love cupboards, boxes, Firkins, pantry boxes and anything wood for the kitchen. I also have a soft spot for special needs children. I worked with them for 24 years, as a Sp Ed teaching assistant. The last six years I worked I trained teaching assistants. During many of those years my husband and I also were antique dealers. What a fun time we had. We have three adult children, and 8 grandchildren, 2 greats and a third on the way. Three of the grandchildren are married and I adore their spouses. One of them lives on my property and does all the yard work. He calls himself the groundskeeper. lol
Hopefully this tells you a little about me and my little home. It is a welcoming house and loves company. I am always happy to have you visit, so if you go to Dollywood, Gatlingburg, or Pigeon Forge you are not too far from me. I’ll put on the coffee, or pour you a glass of tea and if its pretty we can go sit on the porch, and if it isn’t we’ll sit inside and talk and talk and talk. Always remember you are welcome Through My Back Door.
Ps: Thank you so much for asking me to be the January house of the month. I am flattered.
